John Carpenter’s imaginative action adventure is a throwback to the movie serials of the past. Kurt Russell plays a hard-boiled delivery truck driver who must rescue his best friend’s fiancee from a sorcerer and crime boss under the streets of San Francisco’s Chinatown. Carpenter’s unique vision is perfectly encapsulated in this bizarre, fun camp classic.

Dr. Thomas Powers teaches English at Montgomery County Community College, where he has recently developed and taught a course on the graphic novel. He is also the author of Gender and the Quest in British Science-Fiction Television: An Analysis of Doctor Who, Blake’s 7, Red Dwarf and Torchwood (McFarland, 2016) and has composed numerous articles for the Eisner-Award-winning Back Issue! magazine, which specializes in Bronze Age comics history.
