In this road dramedy, Paul Giamatti plays a cynical English teacher who goes on a week-long bachelor trip with his soon -to-be married friend to tour California’s wine country. The quiet weekend is soon upended due to the sophomoric actions of the two men. SIDEWAYS marked a turning point in Alexander Payne’s career, earned five Academy Award nominations, and sparked a fervid passion for wine, particularly Pinot Noir, but definitely not Merlot.
